Our pug has long nails, how can i cut them? do i have to take them to the vet?

He bites anybody who touches his paws, not forcefully but he thinks that you're playing with him, see he's super playful, but i m trying to cut his nails and he won't sit still, hes a fat dog :) what to do?Our pug has long nails, how can i cut them? do i have to take them to the vet?
roll him over onto his back. Sit on the floor with him between your legs. get someone else to hold his head and pet him while you trim his nails. My German Shepherd will NOT let anyone touch her feet since she got her foot caught in a leg-hold trap that was set up for porcupines, and that is how i trim her nails. She lets me, but I have to yell at her to stay while I am cutting them. Our pug has long nails, how can i cut them? do i have to take them to the vet?
Pugs have black nails, correct? It's hard to see the quick (where the blood vessels begin) with black nails. I'd take him to the vet if I had never done something like this before. Call a vet and see what they suggest for you.
when my dogs nails got too long i took her to the vets, and after that keep walking your dog to keep his nails short, it wears them down.
Try to do something to distract him or have someone help you (I have a rambuncious little yorkee) if not than you can do the vet or a groomer, a groomer usually cuts the nails when you take them in
When we cut my beagles nails one person has to hold her close to their body then the other person will cut the nails. You can get a doggie nail clipper anywhere...such as petco.
Go to Petco or something and let them do if for that one time, then while your over there ask them how to cut the nails... that way you don't have to waste money the next time and your pug gets pampered!

It's the perfect crime!
if you have the time practice touch relax. your dog should accept or at least tolerate you picking up his paws, fiddling with his tail, and looking at his mouth and ears. work with him on this for a couple of sessions before attempting to.

or wear him out first.

then pen him gently between you and your arm. spread his claws out, be sure you are in good light to do this... and look closely for the black line cut at just the end of this. else wise you will hurt him. its a vein.

if you feel uncomfortable doing this, take him to a vet. the vet can better demonstrate, or take care of the matter. or you can go to an experienced friend, or dog groomer.
my dog has this problem and for a while I just ignored her claws, but it got to the point that one of her nails toally broke off, so we had to take her to the vet, it took like 5 minutes and cost like 8 dollars, at least go once so you can get an idea of how to hold you dog so you can do it your self next time without the squirming
A dog groomer will be able to help you.
Go to a vet, thats the best thing that you can do, my aunt has a dog and she never cut her nails and it a nasty curled up nail, which she can't cut anymore, so ya take him to the vet.
If you really don't want to go to the vet/groomer, you CAN try doing it at home but it'll be kinda tough. I can tell you they do eventually get used to it. My dog used to hate it but eventually she realized it's not harming her and she settled down. Also it's probably a 2 people job. One can hold the dog and distract him with praise/treats and the other person can cut. Get a dog nail clipper and if his nails are black, just cut a little bit. Some people reccomend dremel tools to sand down the nail so it's less likely to cut too much. He'll probably freak out for a while, so you can only do 1-2 nail at a time. Take it slow! It'll get better.
Easy, wait til your dog is asleep and use a dog clipper, while taking care not to cut too far or it will cause bleeding
I wouldn't take him to the vet if you think you can handle it, but like all dogs they need their nails clipped so you'll have to do them soon. Dog clippers work wonders on my dog and he has the same fidgety problem. I would get someone to help you with this . Put the dog in a possition where he can't move his legs, like a baby sitting possition or suspended. Then if he bites while doing this get some one to hold him under the jaw so he cant reach down and bite. If you're by yourself hook your arm around his neck kind of in a head lock (but gently) so he cant reach your hands. We usually distract our dog with a cookie, one cookie per paw if he's extra fidgety. Its not good to spoil them but the nails need to be done so in this case i think its okay to let it slide. As you do it more often the dog will become more acustom to the routine and better behaved. What ever you do don't cut past the curve of the nail only take a little bit off at a time if you are unsure or else you will draw blood.

Just remember

1) put him in a position where he can't move to enbsure for safe clipping, you should get someone to help

2) let him know its not a game, sometimes its okay to be firm with them (but NOT abusive)

3) never cut about the curve of the nail, try and keeep your hand steady and if all else fails take him to a pets mart or pet groomong place, vets charge way to much for something you can do on your own.

4) a reward for your furry friend is always greatly appriciated =) (but not too often)
well I suggest taking him to a professional . Like a dog grooming place. They really know how to cut well. they make sure they are short enough to not cut you and they make sure they don't hit the quick which would really hurt the dog.

hop this helps and good luck!! :D
aw.. cute thing... i would take him to the vet im sure u dont want to hurt him :)
take her to a groomer
