Thick enough, and as for stopping the noise, yeah it would cuase if someone did that and cuased me to go down with my seven year old daughter on the bike all they would be hearing is the sound of dirt falling off the shovel.

Bikes are loud for a reason. Loud pipes are safe pipes. Nails will do little to a good tire. Only a bald tire will be effected. But remember, cars will suck them all up before a bike ever gets there. Ask your self, would I cut a biker off if I didn't hear him? Probably yes. Cars are so quiet these days and drivers are so distracted that they don't always look very well before changing lanes. I won't ride a quiet bike ever again.
